Scientists Suggest Alternative Source of Arsenic Contamination by: www.scidev.net

Picture:
This picture shows woman going to retreive water in southern and eastern Asia. They have to walk a long way just for that little bucket of water.
Summary:
In the Bengal Basin more than 60 million people are effected from arsenic contamination. Scientists are trying to find the source of this problem. If they find the source they will be able to dig wells where arsenic is not found. Some believe that this may be coming from manmade ponds. They think that they may be seeping arsenic into the groundwater. Some scientists however, think that the ponds may be flushing out the arsenic and reducing contamination.
Opinion/Reflection:
I am supprised that this issue isn't looked at more seriously. I think that this is a huge problem and could get alot worse if something is not done. I think that once scientists find the source of arsenic it will not be hard to find a way to stop this deadly contamination.
Questions:
1) What do you think could be done to stop this?
2) Where do you expect the arsenic is coming from?
3) Do you think that scientists should be working alot harder to find a way to solve this problem?

  1. I agree with matt because this is an issue that is not being taken seriously. Many people are dying from this problem. It is funny how one scientist is saying that the ponds are the cause of it and the the other saying that ponds help bring down the contamination level. Scientist need to tackle this problem right away and come up with some solution.

Question 2- I think that the arsenic is coming from the manmade ponds. It seems likely because humans have made it, and while we were making it, we could have used arsenic or something.

  2. I agree with Mat, more should be done about this problem. I never new this was going on until we talked about it in class and talking about it know. More should be done to not only find where the problem is occuring, but also where and what the solution is before all of asia's waters become contaminated with arsenic or other things.

  3. I feel that this issue is looked over, even though it is very important. Arsenic is a very deadly chemical that probably has killed over thousands of people, and if this is getting into our ground water, then it is going to be very hard to reduce the high levels. The water around Asia can be highly contaminated, which, could possibly, come to us and damage our water.

Question 2: I think scientists probably are working pretty hard on this problem. We cant assume they are not working hard just because we haven't heard about it. It could probably be on a higher priority, but it is still not having nothing done about it
