Picture: The actual pellets used in roofing created by recycled Baby diapers and adult feces.
Summary: Recycling is a huge thing now a days here's just another way the world is doing there part to help used and dirty diapers can now be transformed into a roofing material thanks to the research and production of the Canadian company Knowaste. Knowaste has branches in the UK and in the US and is hoping to expand over the next four years. Knowaste is using waste from nursing homes, childcare centers, and hospitals through special bins that are then ship to processing centers were they are then cleaned, milled into a sludge like substance that is then dried into these plastic pellets. In the article that I read it said that these pellets are very strong and durable. The company is currently trying to find a way to broaden its services to domestics consumers but so far there off to a great start.
Opinion/Reflection: I personally thought that this was interesting how something that we view as trash can be recycled and sold for a profit. Ive heard about some other scenarios were total trash has been recycled into useful things but then you don't hear about them months later, but in reading the article it looks like they are already on the market.
Questions:
1. If you were a roofer would you buy this product?
2.Do you think there will be any controversy over using human waste?
3.Do you agree with the idea of using human waste to create this product?

This is a very different way to recycle your products, but however it is still recycling. I think its cool that they are collecting the diapers and then turning them into sludge, and them drying them into a hard material. This is very interesting, but it just proves that you can find ways to recycle in the most unusual places.

This article gives you a step by step basis on how they collect and then dry the diapers. It looks like a very long process.

This link gives you an actual video that shows the process. The article says this will be a very costly process and it will demand a lot of gas.
If I was a roofer I would buy this product because I know that this company has cleaned and removed all the chemicals off this product and that it is ok to handle.
Opinion/ Reflection:
ReplyDeleteI have a mutual conjecture with Varun on this topic. I feel that this is very interesting, considering the fact that they use waste extracted from our body to form a fun substitute for expensive shingles.Although I find this a great idea, I feel there is going to be quite an uproar on this topic, just for the fact that people would be picky about using feces for roofing materials. Its not like your eating or anything. It's going atop your house where you will rarely have any contact with it. What these drama queens do not understand is that Knowaste is processing feminine hygiene, and that stuff you actually have contact with. As much of a fiery debate there is over this topic, I feel that this is a very nice alternative and could come in handy for the middle class families.
Answer a Question:
3.Do you agree with the idea of using human waste to create this product?
A. As Varun eluded to in his insight on this topic, There are many ways to recycle unusual things in our environment. However, I feel that this is very contradictory. In one way, yes, its a very great way to recycle of the many. but, on the other hand, If there is so many different ways, then why do we have to use what we drop in the toilet. It is very confusing. In my opinion, Even though we are using our feces to make shingles, I do not think this is a CRAPPY idea.(get it, crappy, feces.hah)
*Varun and the BOYZZZZ yayy yayyyy
I think that the idea of using baby diapers and adult feces is an unusual way to recycle but at least it is recycling and that's all that matter. It is also pretty cool that something people defecate in, would be used by roofer's as material to build a roof.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Varun and The_Weird_Uncle23, yes this is a weird way to recycle. I think that this is good because it is saving other materials that would usually be used and replacing them with something that we have an unlimited supply of. I also think that if people know where this product comes from they won't want it on their house or building. It would be better for everyone in the roofers just used it and didn't metion where it was from. All in all this was a very creative way for Knowaste to recycle.
ReplyDeleteAnswer a Question:
1) If i was a roofer in would definatley use this product as long as it worked just as well as the alternitive and was also safe for the roofs. I believe this is a new creative way to go green.
yo hunter you need to do something else just fyi
ReplyDelete1st question, who is "The weird Uncle?" You can keep the name, but just so I know who you are. Let me know in class.
ReplyDeleteAlso, very interesting concept, sounds gross at first, but I am sure they do a lot to it before it is usable again.
